WOW! I grew up in the Daytona Beach, FL area on the beach and surfed for a good majority of my life. I recently moved to Tallahassee for school a year or so ago and missed the beach/surfing immensely. I bought the YFS series to keep me limber and prepared, mentally and physically, for whenever I did get the opportunity to visit my old stomping grounds and not come off as a total kook. With all that said, I went back to visit just this past weekend and lucked out with having a BIG swell come through, compared to Daytona's typical smaller sets. Not being very tall, 6-8 feet swells look intimidating and not to mention not having surfed in 3 or 4 months, I was hesitant about going out. It was 3:00am in the morning, and Peggy shook her husband David awake.
"Sweetie -- I have it! I know what I'm going to do -- I'm going to create the first-ever Yoga for Surfers video so I can teach people around the world how to use yoga to improve their surfing!"
And so, back in 2002, history was born.
After suffering from years of shoulder tendinitis, I was going to have to stop surfing because of the pain. I could barely lift my arm to comb my hair, let along surf. I was scheduled for shoulder surgery to release an impingement, but in the meantime I was going to physical therapy and enjoying the stretches.
I had been a competitive swimmer growing up, and then I did long-distance ocean swims in addition to surfing. All that time in the water took a toll on my body -- especially my shoulders -- and I was desperate for relief.
David, who I was dating at the time, asked me to join him in a yoga class. At first I rolled my eyes...yoga! Would I have to stand on my head, burn incense and chant? I didn't think that would help me at all. Keep in mind this was back in the late 90's before yoga was popular. The only class we could find was at the senior community center. But hey -- it was a date, so I agreed to go along.
That one yoga class ended up changing my surfing -- and changing my entire life. That first night, I slept so soundly and let go of a huge amount of stress that I didn't even know I was carrying around. I learned to breathe correctly, to listen to my body and to pay attention to what was going on around me. In short -- I learned how to live my yoga.
Then an amazing thing happened: my surfing improved dramatically -- and, more astonishing still -- I never ended up having the shoulder surgery after all, because yoga helped me heal. My shoulders are completely healthy and strong and I swim and surf nearly every single day, pain-free.
I was so impressed and astounded by how much yoga helped improve my surfing that I started looking around for a surf-specific yoga video, but there was nothing. That's when I decided to make my own...and now, more than 10 years later since releasing our first Yoga for Surfers® video, we have a series of five best-selling titles and we've heard from thousands of surfers around the world whose lives have been positively impacted by my teaching and philosophy. Just yesterday I was paddling back out on my SUP and had to go over a shoulder high wall of soup. Usually I lose it and fall off, but this time I moved my foot to the rail, stayed relaxed and stayed standing and made it out before the next wave caught me. "You have a real talent for presenting and communicating your routines"
I think you have a real talent for presenting and communicating your routines. That is to say, I understand you have designed routines specific to board-riders and this is definitely appealing about them, but as I tried different routines from other instructors I found myself struggling to settle my body and breathing into a rhythm, and wondered why they didn't coach me through poses the way you did. A lot of them merely state the pose as it is performed, without further explanation, and with YFS (all of them) I feel like I have a much better understanding of how my body should hold itself and allow the poses to guide it. I think if you were to decide to create Yoga routines specific to any sport or lifestyle (Yoga for Tradesmen perhaps?), Peggy, your voice will be equally successful because you are an effective communicator, knowledge of the activity would be a secondary element. The other thing I like about your routines is the length of the poses, I like having the time to allow my body to find a sense of stability in a pose - rather than move on to the next before having settled into one.
Your passion and positivity in your workouts and your upbeat instruction makes doing the routines highly enjoyable!

I just received my DVD set on Saturday. I'm fighting an old hip injury that just recently ended my running career and it's been giving me a little grief on pop-ups. One of my therapists suggested I try yoga to loosen things up, but the "regular" approach to yoga was too hard on my joints. I can't even sit cross-legged. But I liked what I saw in your series so I gave it a try.
Let me tell you, I love it! I can actually follow your program! I particularly like the way it's so well suited to surfing (and boardsports in general) and the fact that I don't have to be all that limber to practice it. I've heard so many claims of exercise that's designed for a specific sport that fell woefully short...it's nice to finally find one. I started at the very beginning and I felt great after my first session!
I'm not one to sit still for long, so when my running career ended, I decided that I would NOT slow down, just change directions. I can no longer run, but I can still surf, bodyboard, ski, snowboard, bike (among other things). I was having major problems with my knees for about five years, spent thousands in doctor and therapy bills, had four shots of cortisone and was very depressed. I'm only 33. I'd been to a yoga class, it it felt like an aerobics class. I prefer being solo in my home. I used the Yoga for Surfers program, fell in love with it because it didn't make me feel dorky, and used it daily for months. I grew up as a competitive swimmer in Southern California and later competed in long-distance ocean swims. Then, when I learned to surf as an adult, you could not get me out of the water!

Hi Peggy I am loving the yoga I do the pre surf routine every day and the Vinyasa flow when I have time or there's no surf
prior to starting your program I was starting to spend a bit of time at the physio with lower back and stiffness through the hips
I now feel so much freer and have no pain I have even gotten rid of that horrible neck and shoulder pain from long days in the water
I am 54 and feel like I am surfing stronger than ever We just got back from a 10 day boat trip in the Maldives spending 5 to 8 hours a day in the water no anti inflammatories required and kept up with the young guys. My only regret is that I didn't start years ago.

P.S. I have told a lot of my friends about your program. The only problem with us older guys is that they would sooner suffer rather than try something new. men are not that smart, but as they surf less and less due to injuries and lack of motivation I still surf as much as I did when I was much younger. We had the good fortune to meet up with Taylor Knox here in California. In his mid-30's, he's still ripping it up on the world tour.

I know you're heard from thousands of people about your videos, but I wanted to add my thanks to you for creating the YFS series. I'm 55 years old, was a competitive surfer as a teenager, and have always suffered from sciatic pain, especially as I got older. I tried everything western medicine has to offer to correct the pain but nothing, even daily doses of morphine, could eradicate it. It would get so bad sometimes after surfing or exercising that I could barely walk or drive. My pain was worse at night making it almost impossible to fall asleep.
